Vancouver Island

The day after I turned 25 there was an eerie hush in the air, which was odd considering that a hangover of that magnitude usually amplifies all sounds to levels not friendly to human ears. I was sitting on a ferry coming home from Vancouver Island (where I had spent the last 2 days with my closest friends drunkenly harassing the locals) contemplating, nothing in particular at first but as we drew closer to the mainland I could not help but ask myself what I was coming home to. Of course I had my loving family, more friends and my job. In all honesty it was a pretty good life that I couldn’t complain about, maybe except for my job which was incredibly boring and un-fulfilling, but something was missing. Understand that up to that point in my life I had done nothing positive for my future, having said that I would be lying if I said that it wasn’t fun. A life free of responsibility and filled with drinking, dancing and throwing money around like it would never run out. But something was different that day….something was about to give.

I kept wondering if this change was sudden or if it was something that had been boiling under the surface for some time and was pushed out by my newly acquired membership to the quarter century club, but it didn’t matter at this point because it was here and I couldn’t shake it off with all the Tequila shots in the world. I was ready to change my life and the first step was getting a better education in a field that I actually wanted to be in. In preparation I put down the bottle and started working on my bad habits and getting in shape a bit (and yes round is still a shape).

A year later and $500 poorer (without books) I was on my way to my Marketing Essentials class at BCIT. By the second half of the 3 hour class I was hooked, I knew that this is exactly what I wanted to do with my life. So I immersed myself in the subject as much as I possibly could. Only weeks into my very first post-secondary course I was looking at books, apps and podcast about Marketing. I found that there was so much more to it than commercials and radio promotions, and amidst all the information there were a few recurring subjects and terms that I was familiar with but knew nothing about. Twitter, LinkedIn, SEO and of course Blogging. I made it my mission to learn about these things and be ready for the moment that I would need to implement them to further my career and so I did. I created a Twitter and LinkedIn account and read up on SEO, now here I am writing my very first Blog.

And so as I continue this crazy trip to self-improvement I hope to practice these new-found tools and maybe in the process entertain, inform or at the very least distract some people with these things called Blogs.
